Donald Byrd: “Fancy Free”

Each side of this record has its own personality – jazz fusion that doesn’t quite fuse with anything on side 1, funkier and blues-soaked sounds on side 2. The highlight of both is Duke Pearson’s electric piano work, as it perfectly balances the rest of the group. Frank Foster’s relaxed and lanky tenor sax work also shines, especially on “The Uptowner."
